Part 1 Activity 3
How has your journey of learning to use multi and single media to teach been so far? What have you learned? What would you still like to learn? What is still hazy?
My understanding of designing instruction exclusively using one media especially graphics is very hard. Also, I think it limits the ability of a designer to create effective design in some aspect for students those learning style is not visual or those who are auditory learner. However, the instruction still can be designed using graphics and some instruction works better using visual design. Ikea is such an example for furniture or other product design.
I believe designing instruction with combination of two or more media may help learners learning more effectively than just a single media. It may make instruction harder and sometimes may cause less motivating for learner. I would prefer to use more than one media to make instruction that will help the learning be more effective.
I wish I had enough time to learn video production and editing in professional level expertise but it is not my passion in this part of my career. I really appreciate who does this creative work. I would like to learn more how to use multimedia to enhance teaching and learning experience. My passion is how I can help faculty to use multimedia instruction to make the learning and teaching more engaging and effective for students.
I am still hazy about what would be the best media to design an effective instruction. Because it is important to keep in mind the learner’s learning style and as it is hard to find a single media instruction to meet all learners need no single media instruction will be the best instruction. I believe use of multimedia to design instruction would be the best form of instruction.
Part 2 Activity 2
What have you learned thus far about designing instruction? What is different? What is the same as other forms of instruction?
I have learned how to design one instruction in seven different ways. I did not know that one instruction can be designed in seven different ways before I took this class. Especially I never designed any instruction using visual media only. I did design instruction using combination of more than one media. It was quite a challenge for me to design an instruction using visual media only. Now, I really appreciate those who create instruction using visual image only like Ikea does. This course prepared me well on how to design instruction in seven different ways and helped me understand the process of creating best instruction considering the learner’s style of learning and theory of multimedia learning.
I have learned that instructional designer should understand the topic, learning theory and objectives that support learning, the style of learners, and format of instruction before designing an instruction to make it effective and efficient.
The difference is to designing a multimedia instruction. It is important to understand the limitations of the use of different media for effective teaching and learning. Special attention should be given while integrating text, visual, audio and video into one multimedia instruction so it does not create any distraction for the learner. Planning a balanced instruction is critical to deliver the best instruction for effective teaching and learning.
